Six farm trading companies with a total membership of 54, farming 30,000 acres with a turnover of £500,000 amalgamate.

1968

Arnold Hitchcock

Arnold Hitchcock becomes Chairman; involved with HHT (Bishop's Stortford) Ltd., which brought together the purchasing strength of the Harvey, Hitchcock and Tinney farming businesses.

The Chantry, Bishop's Stortford

The Company moved from offices at Manor House, Royston, to The Chantry, Bishop's Stortford.

Toby Harvey

Toby Harvey becomes Chairman. During the 70's Grain Marketing was offered to members and many marketed their grain through the office.
1982

East Lodge

The Company buys the freehold premises of East Lodge, 110 Dunmow Road (Samco's office to this day) paid for from the built-up reserves within the Company. During this year, Samco members employ their own agronomist, Peter Taylor; joined a few years later by Jamie Mackay.

1988

John Tinney

John Tinney becomes Chairman, and to encourage a younger involvement in Samco, John created a group of 'Samsons’. It was, as the name suggests, sons of Samco members, who met to discuss expansion. Five of these ‘Samsons’ went on to become Chairman of Samco!
1994

Edward Carter

Edward Carter becomes Chairman. He appoints Paul Agazarian who builds close links between members and the office. Turnover increases by 20% over the next few years.

1997

Richard Scantlebury

Richard Scantlebury becomes Chairman, the first from the ‘Samsons’. During this tenure the average feed wheat price almost halved from £120/tonne to £64/tonne. Samco posted a record turnover and was able to redistribute £20,000 profits to members.
2001

Edward Hitchcock

Edward Hitchcock becomes Chairman. This is an evolutionary time as Shrim Farmers Ltd. approach Samco regarding a possible merge. This came into effect in 2002 and Samco & Shrim Farmers Ltd. expanded to 161 members.

Jane Schwier

Jane Schwier becomes Chair. During this tenure Samco significantly expands their number and variety of suppliers.
2007

James Hamilton & Simon Claydon

James Hamilton becomes Chairman, and appoints Simon Claydon as General Manager in 2008. Over the next few years Samco turnover increases by 43%.

2010

David Harvey

David Harvey becomes Chairman and Samco becomes South Anglia's Mutual Co-Operative (SAMCO), qualifying to operate on a mutual trading basis.
2014

David Tinney becomes a third-generation Chairman. Shareholding membership has grown to 228.

Jonathan Lukies becomes Chairman. Fuel sales grow by 1 million litres in this year.

Nicholas Reed becomes Chairman. Brexit and the pandemic come with economic effects, but Samco plough on, growing next generation members.

Present Day - George Matthews is Chairman. With a turnover of £30 million, the group continues to thrive with 500+ members.
